Choosing the Right Networking Course

Networking courses have been an important part of IT training for years.  As business use of intranets continues to grow, having a strong knowledge of designing, implementing, and maintaining networks will become still more valuable.

Certification programs in networking technologies are popular, and there are several well-respected companies that offer them.  This page will focus on two:  MCSA and MCSE certifications from Microsoft, and CCNA and CCENT certifications from Cisco.

Networking Courses for Microsoft Certification

Microsoft offers several certifications within the networking arena.  These can be awarded based on mastery of a single technology or on a broader standard.  A Microsoft Certified System Engineer (MCSE) designation indicates that the holder has at least one year of experience using Windows Server 2003 or 2008.  He or she is already proficient in designing, building, maintaining, and troubleshooting networks.  The MSCE training courses that Microsoft offers includes installing servers, managing access to the Internet and within the network, boosting connectivity, managing server performance, keeping network security intact, and troubleshooting.

Training courses for MCSAs are similar to those for MSCEs.  A basic MCSA certification requires a total of four exams; MCSE certification calls for seven. A Microsoft Certified System Administrator (MCSA) designation focuses on maintaining an existing network.  MCSA training includes learning how to create and manage user accounts, control web and intranet access, manage file sharing, maintain hardware, software and related devices, and apply backup and system restore programs.

Networking Courses for Cisco Certification

Cisco’s networking certification extends from entry-level to expert accreditation.  A popular Cisco certification is CCNA, or Cisco Certified Network Associate.  This builds on the information acquired in training for CCENT, or Cisco Certified Entry Network Technician.  CCNA certification is valid for three years and demonstrates the ability to install, use, secure, maintain and troubleshoot a network.  Cisco’s networking training courses for CCNA range from Discovery (basic information), and Exploration (a comprehensive study of networking practices) to Security (focusing on the techniques needed to maintain a secure network).
